John synthesises and summarises relevant research and helps make it as accessible as possible to the cultural sector. His current focus is an extensive review of research and practice relating everyday creativity and participation.

John completed his PhD in 2020 which examined artist-led collectives through the lens of friendship to better understand the values art and locality.

John is co-founder of artist-led collective The Retro Bar at the End of the Universe and has a curatorial background in both museums, galleries and in artist-led activity. His research interests include collectivism in art, the role of place in shaping artist-led activity and the intersections between cultural policy and visual arts ecologies.

Ben Walmsley

Ben is the Director of the Centre for Cultural Value and Professor of Cultural Engagement at the University of Leeds. His research encompasses arts management, arts marketing, audience studies and cultural policy, with a focus on audience engagement and enrichment; change management in the arts; and cultural value and leadership.

Prior to his academic career, he worked as an arts manager for ten years, most recently as a Producer at the National Theatre of Scotland. Since 2014, Ben has been the Academic Director of the Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy Programme. His monograph Audience Engagement in the Performing Arts: A critical analysis was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2019.

Mark Robinson

Mark Robinson founded Thinking Practice in 2010, to write, facilitate, coach and advise. Future Arts Centre published his book Tactics for the Tightrope: Creative Resilience For Creative Communities in Summer 2021. Mark was previously Executive Director, North East at Arts Council England. He has also run festivals, poetry presses, community arts organisations and worked in adult education. Mark is a widely anthologised poet. His Selected Poems, How I Learned to Sing is published by Smokestack.

Jo Burns

Jo Burns has worked in the arts and culture sector for over 20 years. For the last decade she has worked for Wirral Museums Service. In 2019 she took over as Museums Manager, six months after starting the role, the country went into lockdown. Since then she has worked with her team to retain audiences through interesting and engaging digital content across the Service’s social media platforms and websites.
